Our History
Care House has responded to over 5,000 families and interviewed over
3,000 children since its opening in July of 1996. All of those children
were spared the trauma of multiple interviews associated with most child
abuse investigations.
Two Macomb County Hospitals, St. Joseph Mercy of Macomb and Mt. Clemens
General, collaborated on the development of the medical component of the
Care House program. With the support of the Metro Health Foundation, the
medical wing at Care House opened on April 30, 1997. Over 250 forensic
medical examinations have taken place at Care House in the
child-friendly examination room.
Care House offers support groups for non-offending parents and their
children. These groups help parents to deal with the practical and
emotional aspects of child abuse and its investigation. Each family is
offered up to six crisis-counseling sessions to help them process the
immediate trauma related to the abuse that has occurred. Care House also
links families to long-term therapy and to community resources.
Care House is the designated Children’s Trust Fund Council for Macomb
County and provides child abuse prevention and education services in the
community. Care House is also an accredited member of the National Children's
Alliance - a not-for-profit organization that provides training,
technical assistance, and networking opportunities to communities
seeking to plan, establish, and improve Children's Advocacy Centers.
